This little neo-Classical-style Greek temple overlooking the Seine Valley is typical of 18th-century French style with its English landscape garden, monumental entrance with a peristyle enclosed by four columns, and paintings by Boucher and Fragonard.

Louis XV was 58 years old when, in June 1768, he lost his wife, Queen Marie Leczynska. The King's remarriage became a major preoccupation at Court. But in April 1769, indifferent to the schemings of his entourage, Louis XV decided to impose his own choice on the Court. The King was head over heels in love with his latest conquest, the beautiful Jeanne, who had become Comtesse Guillaume du Barry. He was 59, she was 25.
In July 1769, Louis XV offered Jeanne the 'Pavillon des Eaux' at Louveciennes to enjoy for the rest of her lifetime. The Countess, who liked entertaining, had no difficulty in persuading her royal lover to build her another pavilion where she could receive her guests. Its design was entrusted to a promising architect: Claude Nicolas Ledoux.
The Countess held many sumptuous receptions there before the Pavillon and the château just above it, were sold in 1795.
Since then, the Pavillon has had a succession of owners, including François Coty, the famous parfumier. Since 1990, it has been owned by the Fondation Julienne Dumeste.
