1. In the shadow of the Sun King

Born in 1638 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Louis XIV spent part of his life in the town, which was the king’s official residence and a place where power was exercised. We offer guided tours of the town where pupils can learn more about Louis XIV, through his taste for the arts and his political, cultural and economic actions. For cycles I, II and III.

Marly-le-Roi owes its fame to Louis XIV, who chose this site to build his country residence. We invite you to visit the historic centre as well as the Musée du Domaine royal de Marly and the Domaine national de Marly. For cycles I, II and III.

2. Arts and letters

  • The Château de Monte-Cristo: home and park of Alexandre Dumas, the famous author of the Trois Mousquetaires and the Comte de Monte-Cristo.
  • The Maurice Denis departmental museum: Surrounded by a vast terraced garden, planted with large trees and inhabited by sculptures (notably by Bourdelle), the museum offers beautiful interior volumes conducive to contemplating the works of the “Nabi with beautiful icons” and his friends.
  • The house where Claude Debussy was born and the Ducastel-Vera museum in Saint-Germain-en-Laye
  • The André Derain house in Chambourcy: like Matisse and Picasso, André Derain was a key artist involved in the two great pictorial revolutions of the early 20th century, Fauvism and Cubism
  • The Fournaise museum in Chatou : The educational tour and storytelling tour take children in Renoir’s footsteps to meet the Fournaise family, discover canoeing fashions, life in the 19th century, the painter’s equipment and Impressionist painting.
  • The Grenouillère museum in Croissy-sur-Seine: A guinguette on the banks of the Seine between 1885 and 1928, the Grenouillère attracted Parisians eager for leisure, but above all writers, such as Maupassant, and painters like Monet and Renoir.
