1. Day tours

One day to discover our region! Our suggested tours highlight the sites that make up Saint Germain Boucles de Seine. Whether you’re a nature lover or a history buff, one day won’t be too much to satisfy your expectations!

A pictorial movement that revolutionised the history of art, Impressionism celebrates its 150th anniversary, this year. Since its creation, Normandy, Paris and the Ile-de-France still bear the imprint of these avant-garde artists, like a veritable open-air studio. Saint Germain Boucles de Seine has immortalised many of these landscapes, which we suggest you discover by following one of our two circuits.

  • Circuit Les maisons des illustres
  • Circuits in Chatou
  • Circuits in the footsteps of the Impressionists

    Circuit in Saint-Germain-en-Laye

2. Artists’ homes

Saint Germain Boucles de Seine has inspired many artists, be they writers, painters or musicians, and we invite you to enter their private lives.

Discover the world of Alexandre Dumas at the Monte-Cristo estate in Port-Marly, where the famous author of The Three Musketeers had a château built nestling in the heart of an English-style park. Not far from there, in Chambourcy, André Derain, one of the creators of Fauvism, set up his studio in a house, the Maison André Derain, where the memory of this multi-faceted artist is still very much alive. Finally, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, we suggest you visit the Maison natale Claude Debussy*, a space dedicated to a great French composer, and the Musée départemental Maurice Denis. Also known as the Prieuré, this former hospital, built in the time of Louis XIV, was transformed into a home by the painter and today offers you beautiful spaces conducive to contemplation.

3. Royal towns

At Saint-Germain-en-Laye, several guided tours are on offer: historical tours in the footsteps of the Sun King or Napoleon, discovering the Old Castle, the historic quarters or the Apothecary’s. At Marly-le-Roi, you’ll enter the intimacy of Louis XIV as you discover the Museum of the Royal Estate of Marly, the park and the village.

“Unusual” tours are also available by following the treasure hunt at Saint-Germain-en-Laye or Giant Cluedo at Marly-le-Roi.

4. Impressionism

The banks of the Seine attracted many artists, particularly the Impressionist painters: Sisley, Monet, Pissarro and Renoir immortalised many of our region’s landscapes on their canvases. In Chatou, you can discover the Fournaise hamlet on the Île des Impressionnistes, take a stroll along the Seine or visit the Fournaise museum, which offers a show exploring the work of Renoir. In Croissy-sur-Seine, you can stroll along the Impressionist Trail and visit the Grenouillère museum. And if you fancy more unusual visits, we also offer dramatised tours and giant Cluedo, to combine culture and entertainment!

5. Towns and villages

Between great and little histories, our towns tell their own stories… You’ll fall under the spell of the picturesque lanes and troglodyte houses of Carrières-sur-Seine, In Louveciennes you’ll follow in the footsteps of Elisabeth Vigée Lebrun or those of the Impressionist painters in Croissy-sur-Seine and Port-Marly. Fourqueux, Sartrouville and L’Etang-la-Ville are also among the towns we suggest you discover.

6. Places to visit

The Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye contains a fabulous treasure trove, the collections of the Musée d’Archéologie Nationale: the Dame de Brassempouy, the statue of Vercingétorix, the skull of the Megaceros, all must-see works that we suggest you discover. Located close to the château, the Paul-et-André Véra space is dedicated to the collection of these two artists and brothers. Other more unusual venues are also open to you: Chanorier in Croissy-sur-Seine with its Lego exhibitions, Eau des Carmes and Carrara City in Carrières-sur-Seine. Less well known but just as interesting, these sites are just waiting for you to unveil them!

New! Our guided tour of the Tramway T13 line, due to open in 2022. From Saint-Germain-en-Laye to Saint-Cyr-L’école, you’ll discover the history and monuments visible from this new line. This tour is led by a guide from the Tourist Office.
