- Napoleon III, archaeologist
In the 19th century, Napoleon III, who had a passion for archaeology, decided to rid the Château de Compiègne of its vestiges of the past, and brought them to the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye which thus became the Musée d'Archéologie Nationale. Following a presentation of the town's imperial history, a tour of the Piette room which houses a collection devoted to another archaeology enthusiast, Edouard Piette (1827-1906)

- Napoleon III discovery tour
In August 1855, during an official visit to Paris, Queen Victoria asked Napoleon III to arrange for her to visit the site where the Stuarts, her ancestors, had been exiled. Following that request, the Emperor, who was a keen archaeologist, decided to convert the château into a museum, which thus became a showcase for French archaeology.

Guided tour of the town: outdoor presentations of the imperial guards' officers mess under Napoleon III, and the royal manège.
