Carrara City: an old quarry that has become an artistic gold mine
In the 12th century, it was a stone quarry, especially alberese, the same limestone that was used to build the splendid Saint-Denis Basilica.
Today, the quarry has been regenerated and listed as an architectural heritage zone. It has become the Espace Carrara / Carrara City, a leading arts venue: sculpture, film, dance, photography, painting and its natural underground setting make it a great place for all forms of creative expression.
Only for artists, or guided tours on on special days like Journées Européennes du Patrimoine (European Heritage Days).
