Let's take a walk in the woods The Sentier du Val in the Forêt de Saint-Germain-en-Laye

The Sentier du Val, also known as the Val Discovery Trail, is a 2.8km loop nestled in the majestic forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, just a few kilometres from Paris. Accessible to all, this trail is ideal for a family nature outing or a walk with your dog – it’s totally dog-friendly!

Curated by the Office National des Forêts (ONF), this fun trail features 10 educational stations that immerse you in the world of the state-owned forest: animal and plant species, traces of the past, forest management… Follow the salamander symbol, your guide along the way, to learn more while you marvel.

The starting point is the Maison du Val...

Start your walk in the heart of the Saint-Germain forest, near the Maison du Val, an elegant 4-star hotel steeped in history. This classical-style building, built in the 12th century for Henri IV as a royal hunting lodge, evokes the charm of the famous Pavillon de la Muette. Today, the Maison du Val, a member of the Les Maisons de Campagne group, offers a unique setting for a relaxing weekend in the heart of nature, just a few kilometres from Paris.

The forest of Saint-Germain

Before venturing off in the footsteps of the salamander, let’s take a moment to recall the exceptional history of this royal forest. Formerly known as the Forest of Laye, it became part of the royal domain very early on. It was Francis I who initiated the layout of the star-shaped paths and crossroads, facilitating hunting with hounds.

Later, Louis XIV had 5 million trees planted and built a 34 km wall around the massif! In the 19th century, Napoleon I further extended the forest with the Plaine de la Jonction, creating a link between Saint-Germain and the Marly-le-Roi forest. He also set up a military camp here and built the Legion of Honour education centre. A forest steeped in more than 500 years of history, which today welcomes more than 3 million visitors a year.

Preserving biodiversity

By following the Sentier du Val, you will cross protected natural areas classified as ZNIEFF (Zone Naturelle d’Intérêt Écologique, Faunistique, Floristique et Paysager). There is a rare wealth of flora and fauna here, and some places, such as the mare aux Canes or the étang du Corra, play a crucial role in maintaining this biodiversity.

These peaceful watering holes are perfect for a contemplative break or a moment to observe the local species. If you’re lucky, you might spot frogs, lizards or other discreet forest dwellers. And if you hear festive sounds in the distance, it’s probably the Fête des Loges! Every summer, this iconic funfair sets up not far from the trail, adding a touch of gaiety to your nature immersion.

Oratories, crosses and breathtaking views over the valley

Look up along the way: you might spot one of the 7 oratories or 4 crosses scattered throughout the forest. These spiritual testimonies are part of a second, longer itinerary, the Sentier des Oratoires, an 18km loop dedicated to enthusiasts of religious heritage and forest walks.

The Sentier du Val loop ends where it began. But if you want to extend the magic a little further, continue on to the Domaine National de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. From the large terrace designed by Le Nôtre, enjoy a spectacular panorama of the Seine valley and, in the distance, the skyline of Paris. It’s the perfect way to round off a trip that combines nature and history.
